Columbia University Photography Society teamed up for a second year in a row with the Weatherhead East Asian Institute to select and exhibit the winners of their annual East/Southeast Asian photography contest. The photographs in this exhibition were selected for an ability to create appreciation for the uncommon in common moments of life across East and Southeast Asia. The experience of travel, perhaps more so than any other, heightens sensitivity to everyday life. Surrounded by people living lives that in many ways mirror our own, we are nonetheless guests in someone else’s home. Such knowledge forces the visitor to not take their settings for granted, and to appreciate the exquisite found in someone else’s everyday. In turn, this sense of wonder can accompany travelers home, who find themselves more inspired by these same moments within their own daily lives.
